MY FAVORITE MAGGIE ROGERS SONGS; a sentence meme. ↳ literally just a self-indulgent meme of lyrics from my favorite songs.
"the forest is dark and i'm wide awake, not sleeping."
"the road to my heart is stark, but i'm alive."
"which way would you run if you were looking through my glass eyes?"
"i was born to daylight with twilight tangled in the sky."
"the morning light will warm my tired bones."
"say your heart, it wrote me letters all the time."
"say it sealed them up and with your breath did sign them all away."
"say that your notes, they were no forgery, you meant them every line."
"you could cut my knees and leave me at the door, i'd still pick all your memories off our dusty floor."
"tell me how you are and i'll write a song for every feeling i can't name."
"we abided by the night, but there are darker things than the absence of light."
"we don't have to talk, leave your words in the city with your heavy thoughts."
"silence lays like lace around my mind."
"can you can recall that moment at all when we warmed up way last june?"
"but now I'm sick of the silence."
"the knife of insight tore its way in me."
"don't hit me up if you're feeling down."
"would you believe me now if i told you i got caught up in a wave?"
"would you hear me out if i told you i was terrified for days?"
"i couldn't stop it, tried to slow it all down."
"if you keep reachin' out, then i'll keep coming back."
"do you believe me now that i always had the best intentions, babe?"
"i'm praying to the headlights like i prayed to you."
"roll the windows down, kill the radio, i'd rather hear the wind than hear that song I'm supposed to know."
"you tell me that forever couldn't come too soon, i wanna lose my mind in a hotel room with you."
"all i've ever wanted is to make something fucking last."
"i started out trying to do what's right and lost it all in the middle of the night."
"one of these days, i'm gonna wake up smiling."
"remember the days we used to drive upstate singing indie-rock songs in the car."
"i was all the way in, you were halfway out the door."
"you were an animal making your way up the hill and i was going in for the kill."
"so you think you're on the right track, cruising on the bridge in your gray cadillac."
"you think it's easy? walking on the water like there's stepping stones."
"i'm so sick of dreaming."
"if you think that life without me's like a heart attack, take a long look in the mirror and be good with that."
"i could be your heron blue sky, i could be your white night lullaby."
"the hindsight's been the hardest part."
"cause i remember late september, your silhouette on blue wallpaper."
"you drew the line and pulled me under, but do you ever stop to wonder about me?"
"all of the things we pulled apart, i let it go, it doesn't matter."
"the seasons changed, it broke my heart."
" i will always remember you when we were dancing in the living room."
"i see it now who i was back then, so young and hungry."
"you loved me strong, and you were my friend when the world felt empty."
"i remember sentimental sleepless nights, i set the table, and just waited."
"i would have given every song i've ever written just to spend one day with you."
" when you think of me completely, i hope it doesn't freak you out."
"when you love somebody new, i hope you say it out loud."

oc ask meme! hirmi: 3 7 9 12 bodrum: 1 12 13 19
For Hirmi :3c
3. What is your OC’s fatal flaw? Are they aware of this flaw?
he's a people-pleaser through and through. a real peacekeeper. which can be a strength but! he tends to be submissive and frequently takes the backseat of his own life to prioritize the needs of others (usually his family). it's very unfortunate for him bc he has desires and goals that vastly oppose what his culture tells him he should want out of life. he's always torn between making the people around him happy at the expense of his own happiness vs pursuing his own goals and creating a lot of family tension.
he is absolutely not aware of this flaw lol. he's not self-reflective enough to realize he's doing this.
7. What’s one way your OC has changed since you first came up with them?
originally he was going to be tall. he lives FAR north tho and i found out a lot of animals in the north tend to be compact to preserve body heat. so i made him a little dude instead.
9. Do you have a specific lyric or quote which you associate with your OC?
MANY. i answered a question similar to this a while ago for him but i didn't get to use ALL the songs on my hirmi playlist so i still have more.
"I was walking through icy streams / That took my breath away / Moving slowly through westward water / Over glacial plains / And I walked off you / And I walked off an old me" - Alaska, Maggie Rogers
12. Is your OC self-destructive? In what ways?
yea i think so. in some ways. definitely not as bad as other ocs of mine. i've hinted at some family tension above. his mom has a history of making some pretty not great comments about him to his face! especially about his appearance! which he has unfortunately internalized. he's especially concerned about overeating/bulking up/putting on weight and budgets his daily calories with goodberry (dnd spell)
For Bo :3c
1. What memory would your OC rather just forget?
every time alekah makes a joke in front of the group at his expense. this happens frequently!
12. Is your OC self-destructive? In what ways?
thankfully, i don't think so! bo has a LOT of issues from his past but his story is about confronting those issues in as healthy a way as alternian culture would allow. which means getting a moirail! he relies on his moirail amytis to keep himself in line. maybe he should invest in a real therapist instead of putting all the responsibility onto her, but hey at least it's a start.
13. If you met your OC, would the two of you get along?
i think so. we could chill and read. go on a quiet nature walk. go to a bakery and satisfy our sweet tooth. fill up on more sugar than either of our little bodies can handle. it'd be a good day.
19. How does your OC behave when enraged?
not great, lol! violently! i am realizing now the reason why bo gets a pass on the self-destructive label is because he takes all his destructive tendencies out on others! subjugation is his coping mechanism <3 thankfully for the safety of everyone around him he has amytis who tirelessly stops him from going on an insane purpleblood murder rampage when provoked. which again, with alekah around, happens frequently!

tagged by proxy by @rabdoidal for a music shuffle meme, and I just got my ye olde ipod classic working again, so let's slap it on
Till Death - Japanese Breakfast "Soft Sounds from Another Planet" is a no-skip album for me. Till Death has such a lovely key change towards the end, a lower shift, and just lovely brass. Your voice in the night, sing me to sleep, soothe this insomnia
Green Light - Lorde A song I played a LOT when I was a junior in college. All of "Melodrama", really. This one has a really good build to it, though I feel like I've outgrown it. Oh honey, I'll come get my things, but I can't let go
Sorry - dodie What you have to understand about the second half of "Build A Problem" is that it's meant to be listened to in one fell swoop. The songs intentionally lead into and out of each other. It always jars me when I hit Sorry without it being followed by When. It is a beautiful little song, though. Let me go back, show me the eyes, so I'd really know just what it looks like, there was the end I couldn't find, found too late
Wrecking Ball - Mother Mother With the exception of Body, I wasn't on the Mother Mother train until a few years ago (Body I jammed to in high school). The lyrics are fine, but what really makes this one for me is the instrumentation. It takes a dedicated hand to put it through the wall
Never Let Me Go (Live) [MTV Unplugged] - Florence + the Machine While I've been on board with everything FATM has done since, and including, "Ceremonials", this song especially holds my heart in its watery grip. The live version, stripped down, lets the vocals shine. And the crashes are heaven for a sinner like me, but the arms of the ocean delivered me
Everything Will Be Alright - The Killers For personal reasons, I have a hard time listening to this album as a whole (and what an album to have to miss out on!) but, of all of the songs that could come up from this album, I'm glad it's this one for the lyrics. That said, I don't really love this song anyway? And I won't forget you, at least I'll try and run and run tonight
Symphony - Maggie Rogers I really like the way Maggie has stepped into herself with her second full album. Symphony is, I think, a slept-on song from the album that opens with so many bangers. The lyrics are fine, but this song really shines with the instrumentals. Can you live like nothing's left? Forget your emptiness, take a breath
Between the Lines - Sara Bareilles I have loved this song since middle school. I tried to learn it on piano, back in my "I want to learn piano" days. Sara Bareilles has such a wonderful command of melody, and a killer voice. And I could have sworn I'd heard him say it ten thousand times, oh, if only I'd been listening
Moon Song - Phoebe Bridgers My favorite song off of "Punisher". I love how Phoebe will build a metaphor and bring the words back around to it in the end of the song. When you saw the dead little bird, you started crying, but you know the killer doesn't understand.
Runaway - Penelope Scott From one of her newest releases, it's a slightly mean-spirited, self-demeaning, delightfully-accompanied romp about putting yourself aside to love someone else. It's all fucked until it isn't, it's all bullshit til you miss them
anyway, anyone who sees this and wants to, go for it! ten songs, shuffled, from your music library/liked songs/whatever. tag me if you do? I want to read it.

‎Francisco Martin Serves Long-Distance Drivers With A Lullaby Dubbed ‘Passenger Princess’Francisco Martin is a rising star in the music industry, captivating audiences with his soulful voice and compelling lyrics. Born and raised in San Francisco, California, Martin’s passion for music began at a young age. He started performing in front of his family and friends, and eventually expanded to local venues around the Bay Area. Martin’s breakthrough moment came when he auditioned for American Idol in 2020, earning a spot on the show’s 18th season. He quickly became a fan favourite with his performances of hits like “Alaska” by Maggie Rogers and “Falling” by Harry Styles. He ultimately finished in the top five of the competition, cementing his place as a rising talent in the industry. Since his time on American Idol, Martin has been hard at work creating new music and building his fanbase. His debut EP, “Beautiful Ramblings,” showcases his powerful vocals and heartfelt songwriting. The lead single, “Wild Girl,” is a standout track that showcases Martin’s ability to seamlessly blend indie-pop and R&B influences. With his undeniable talent and charismatic personality, Francisco Martin is a force to be reckoned with in the music world. Fans eagerly await what he has in store next, as he continues to captivate audiences with his music and authentic artistry. This is Francisco Martin’s first new release of the year 2023, and it’s a doozy: the new track is called “Passenger Princess,” and it’s soulful, lively, and explosive. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIMocvZ4aI4[/embed] This lullaby for the long-distance motorist reveals another side of Francisco—one that is gentler and more sensitive—in which pleasure and contentment are seen as the ultimate good, and where the feet of your crush is placed on your dashboard. In this song, which obviously takes tribute to the popular meme circulating on the internet about females who don’t drive but are driven spoilt, life is seen via a wide-angle lens, with cinematic panoramas of sunsets and the Pacific Coast Highway. “Passenger Princess” is a tapestry of TikTok that includes aesthetic hedonism and mesmerising melodies that make you want to go for a drive just because it makes you want to. Whereas Francisco’s sophomore EP contains starkly unapologetic and unafraid chronicling, “Passenger Princess” is a stark contrast. The poem incorporates many entries from the Urban Dictionary, transforming a meme into a musical composition. [embed]https://open.spotify.com/track/1ggeREUEQo2Qt5prF16UsX[/embed]

7,17, 27 for the fic writing meme!
This is a very pleasing selection of numbers.
If you use song lyrics, which artist’s songs did you pull from the most?
Maggie Rogers is the MVP for lyrics you can break up for song or chapter titles. Two of my recent faves: when we're cheek to cheek, I feel it in my teeth and boulders turn to sand, wherever you go that's where I am. Just begging to be titles. Look at them.
Your favorite character to write this year?
I've spent a lot of time writing Farah Dowling and have regretted not a second of it. What I love about her is that she has this real steel to her coupled with vulnerability, she's done appalling things but retained a sense of gentle optimism and hope. My favourite type of character to write is someone who's super competent in some ways and a disaster in others and has a tragic backstory to explore, so she called to me. At first I was like 'how on earth do you write a narrator who can read minds' and now I'm like 'what if I only write mind readers from now on'.
What do you listen to while writing?
Every fic has a specific playlist, which I'll put on repeat when I'm mulling or actually writing to help me get into the headspace for the fic. Sometimes if I'm writing something intense or don't want to be distracted by lyrics, I put on a 24hr playlist of Star Trek engine noises, which works better than any white noise I've ever used.
Questions if anyone else wants one.

@mysterybees tagged me in a music meme! Thank you so much, it makes me so so happy that you thought of me, cheer my dear 😊 rules: you can usually tell a lot about a person by the type of music they listen to. put your playlist on shuffle and list the first 10 songs, and then tag 10 people. no skipping!   tbh I used Spotify to make me a playlist and i had to skip a bunch of songs i have never heard before because i forgot Spotify’s algorithm sucks lol 1. Presumably Dead Arm (617 Sessions) by Sidney Gish 2. SUPERBLOOM by MisterWives 3. Fall With Me by The Wild Reeds 4. Water by Ra Ra Riot feat. Rostam 5. Honeybee by The Head and the Heart 6. Love You For A Long Time by Maggie Rogers 7. Happy If You're Happy by Matt and Kim Feat. Skizzy Mars* 8. Build Me Up Buttercup covered by Lara Anderson 9. Run Away With Me covered by San Fermin 10. When DId Your Heart Go Missing by Rooney wow this is indie and cheesy as fuck lmao. #7 is one of my favorite songs ever, I even titled a Baze/Chirrut fic I wrote for polarcell based on their fanart after one of the lyrics because it fits them perfectly. I may as well link it here bc I’m pretty proud of that fic: something bout you’s heaven sent, so what i want’s irrelevant I will tag: @shih-coulda-had-it @egregiousderp @skinks @verditers @vaenire @polarcell @standstillgo and idk anyone else who wants to!

The Best of 2019 and Beyond | Staff Picks

It’s the end of 2019. The world is on fire. You inhale your mango-flavored juul pod. The most pivotal figure in the world is a 16-year-old Swedish girl. Your Amazon Alexa listens intently in the corner of your bedroom. What I’m trying to say is that it has been an absolutely crazy year and an equally mind-blowing year for music. And what better way to cap the end of a year, an end of a decade than to perform a mandated survey on the entire Ones To Watch staff in the hopes of gathering their thoughts on the music that shaped their 2019, their 2010s, and their predictions for this brave new decade.

Very messy Delta review
Hey gang, i sat & typed & spiraled while listening to delta for the first time just now, so if that interests you to read barely legible thoughts, it’ll be under the read more thing. dang i’m sad!! BUt spoiler alert: GOOOD ALBUM! I’m SAD!! (do note I don’t find the album or many tracks all-around too sad, I’m just a depressed bih)
Delta thoughts: okay i’m not gonna really edit what i wrote but for everyone’s sanity i’ll bold the song titles, okay?
42: BINCH! See a sign, I need some guiding light,,, eff ME UP OKAY?? This is such a strong start i’m already getting teary-eyed, huh. Ugh, it’s so satisfying… well effing done lads,, well done
Guiding Light: Hot dang the whispered beginning?? I really need to fix my computer speakers because this sounds heavenly in my over-ear headphones,, gosh dang. Discover some new TRUTH! Gosh dang this is not a comprehensive review in the slightest but i don’t care!! Binch!! I can’t even say anything good… when beloved or darkness visible makes me cry, i guess beloved is fourth? So if it does it’ll be first, anyway, when i start crying maybe i have something cooler to say. Not crazy about the “dubstep build” on this, after the bridge, just because i don’t believe it, like it’s not long enough, and resolves unconvincingly. But, anyway.
Woman: literally FRICK i thought if i say was next this start is cool and very Winston. Oh vibes?? Oh worm?? Woman?? I’m like 15 seconds in and this is… yes. Can you ever really know? No. is ths song even about anything lol i don’t think i care?? Issa vibe, gang. Chorus?? Eff me up. He said frosty… wendy’s come collect. Oh that was the pre-chorus?? This is f*cking me up… VIBES. i ‘ve been waiting for them to try this in a song of theirs and not like a cover.. I knew they were capable…. The range they’re displaying rn? I love it. I love them wtf!!  Oooh man i wanna see this live? There’s this drumstick noise, like rimshots? That sounds so satisfying. Yes, clackety clack. This is nice. Nice song. Don’t really know what they’re singing, bt this is warm. I like it. Mumford & sons finally said it’s 2018, huh. I just got a youtube notification of me commenting on their radio appearance and i literally said “the range they’re showing? Fantastic” and yanno what,, same
Beloved: this song started like right away huh. He said darling… dang he did that. He’s fitting a lot of words in on this one. Ohh the lord has a plan? It is hard to understand… i love these lyrics.. Big brain meme. Are you afraid? The attack.. Hand come through the mirror?? That visual!!! O f*ck me up. Before you leave :(( yeah it’s getting to me aHAHA.ohh this breakdown? Yes. these drums are especially nice. Ugh i really missed these guys wtf :(. AND AS YOU LEAVE, YOU MUST KNOW YOU ARE BELOVED> yes. Yes. as you LEeeeEEeaaveee. See my children playing at your feet?? BOI.. i’m so soft wtf.. They’re really putting it all out… i wanna hug them i’m so… this is so sweet aw. Oh no the song is fading, no don’t do that song
What song is this the piano can f*ck me up: ben man, you’re doin that huh. No literally did we have to jump to this painful… frick. This violin? Is nice. WE SAW BIRTH AND DEATH. Oh frick. They’re just going for it this is a lot i’m soft. Lemme actually see what song this is lol.. It’s The Wild. i have like chills & i can’t tell if it’s because i’m cold or not. Do not be afraid :(. OH they stripped it back!!! THIS IS NICE! Binch! Puts the fear of God in me :( this is so nice .. it’s hard to pick what to focus on. What’s that i see binch? I think it’s the wild… marcus is really do THAT with these vocals, huh. There was like a breath and.. The atmosphere during this part?? Nat Geo who??? Ohhh i like this so much.. It’s like a soundtrack.. The sampling of noise?? The background?? It’s cool, doesn’t specifically sound like them at all, but, aw these drums :( now it’s like a war movie.. This is so interesting. Those drums remind me of the drums in winter winds that i can sometimes here & it’s very drill-like and marching band-esqe and i love it. Aw birds??? You know what this reminds me of…. I won’t say
Next song: marcus is playing no games with these vocals, jesus. October Skies.. Isn’t this his favorite one… ooh ted I hear that bass,, eff it up.OooooOOOoooHH. The range… i love these guys. I’m blinded by the light of october skies… the movie with Jake Gylenhaal, and in the valley I am free :( where’d the silehute go? OOOooooOOOOooooHH YOUr’e esesjfsfshesal!! The fear of what’s to come.. CRIPlin’ me :( binch. Is this synth lowkey?? Brand it on my mind is such a great visual, like the “press my nose up to the glass around your heart” line.. Who wrote it. Oh is the sonG_ OOOOOOoooooOOOOOOoooooHHHH. Maggie rogers is that you? Hot dang
An upbeater!! Wipe those tears baby! Is this the just smoke of this album. This is.. Slip Away. “stoic smile” i see you… haha. Ooh this chorus is nice COME AND SUFFER HERE, LADIES! Mood!! Holding my breathe for you? F! In this violence of a mind’s eye… i like everything except maybe---- ohh this falsetto?? I’m.. i’m tearing.. Oooh we just found a song to cry to in the middle of the night, huh. It’s misleading with the beat vs. the lyrics.. I wouldn’t have it any other way!! Gosh i’m so depressed! Lol!! There’s a pulsing beat of some kind that’s nice.. Also some nice guitar work on here, some clackety things… go gently… be still…. Go gently….now… be still… Go Gentlyyyyy nowwwww, be stiiiilllll. Ugh they.. They’re doing this… i’m so proud of them wtf. Is this winston?? Who is singing.. Marcus?? I can’t.. Tell? No i think its marcus but we’ve truly never heard that high-end from him for that long
Okay: next song is pretty interesting- ooh! Right off the bat! This has to be the one they said sounded like ngalma? However you spell it… clap clap clap clap clap, this is a drum-machiner one for sure. I will be yours & you will be mine, ever our lives will be entwined binch! This noise after “my rose of sharon” is a mood. Ugh this is so cute.. Imagine being happy w/ someone else, what a concept ! eeeeeee yuh! That’s what they’re singing in the back.. My rose of sharon, my rose of sharon, BRR BRR BRN NER! Did the song-- what’s up with these abrupt endings
That being said, Picture You sounds v vibey right off the bat. Okay lads! I thought it best you didn’t knowww. I’m so proud of Marcus for flaunting these vocals, i stg, I’ve spoken on this before but... like he can do that!! I’m so glad he’s,, doing it! Ooh the “away” is v nice. I love full-stops in music, where the sound gets sucked out like here or just stops entirely… yes boys. Okay.. not crazy about this kind of.. Breakdown but it’s still cool. Just not in-rand as much as some other things. I mean, this sound is V different of course but they’re workin’ it. Okay i kind of stopped paying attention for a sec… there’s sampling… ohhh oh no it’s getting dark… hohoho no guys.. I’m excited but the anxiety is jumping out… holy smokes this is cool tho. It’s pretty. Hope that never comes, that comes to all.. Torture without end… yet from the great flames no light,,, but rather.. .DARKNESS VISIBLE. I’m gonna check if it didn’t seamlessly bleed into darkness visible…
Oh it did!! Their minds!! God, i already know i love darkness visible,, it was my pre-album listen fave on details about it alone,, we’re depressed sweeties let’s pop off… it’s so nice >:(. And just like that it ended!!!! BINCH!!! Ooh they’re like not even vocally in that one… i like that ish!! Not the “them not being in it” in that way but OOH! That was effing cool
If I Say: is still v v nice,, sounds effing expansive and beautiful with good headphones, i’m picking up all the lil details and prettiness.. The synth line after “if i say i love you, well then i love you” is sooo satisfying too. Ugh this orchestra,,, it’s building.. Truly their minds were so big on this album, huh. I’ll tell you what It doesn’t mean that i feel better! It doesn’t mean that I feel better! I’m, haha i still kinda hate this chorus but their so passionate i can’t hate it all the way,, like they love this ish and are into it & i love them so it’s allll good homies. I dig. I’ll be fake and wild out when they play it live, don’t worry. But peace you never find :( the guitar tone is crispyyyy,, the instrumentation… ugh it’s so nice. Violins can murder me or someat and I’d accept it. AND IF I SAY I LOVE YOU, THEN I LOVE YOUUUU. Ugh,, so so nice man
What’s NEXT: ooh some seamlessness in that transition.. .is this ghost of tom joad i’m hearing lol, mortal once again!! Oh this is a mood, freak.. Sigh no more marcus really jumped out on this one. This shuffling maraca thing is so nice. I’ll hold you by the jaw!! Hoo hoo bihhh. “It took a wild heart to tame mIIiine” this is so nice wtf!! Ugh this is so nice. I wouldn’t have you any other way,, awwwwwWWW!! Who want a love that makes sense anyway? I’ll effing say! Ugh this is very nice. These lyrics are so interesting… this is a good one guys, quiet & sweet but there’s some pretty cool things also going on, like it’s simple but its… this is it, ya know? This piano is sweet too. This whole thing is sweet, maybe that’s a dumb word to use but. This is so sweeeeet ugh!!! The vocal riffs on “mine” … ugh!! I kind of like the echoey vocals too.. Soft rain patter for two seconds at the end??
Reverse noises w/ a big breath from Marcus: let’s effing go w/ this album, gang!! What song is this reminding me of… whispers in the dark? He did some late-babel, early wilder mind voice thing.. Wait it’s forever isn’t it. I heard this one i think, like 3 yrs ago.. Yup, Dare I Say Forever.. I still don’t like do it for the girl” cos it’s too straightfoward, ,”i’ve known pious women” LOL where is this going. Only mumford & sons can really put that word in a song and just, keep singing. We stan tho, we stan. Think of london,,, we love. The DAAaaYS you defend will turn to gold,, this could easily be the last song on the album, this is like a last-call at the bar song,, in a good way, i’ve linked arms with my buddies & we’re all yelling this song like goons,, yes. Lighters a-waving,, are we too sentimental to not look back atnd!! WOW he realy did that with stare!! I couldnt finish typing that.. Is this part auto-tuned?? Dare I say.. Why? I’m choosing to hear it as a vocoder and many harmonies so i don’t hate that but uhaha they.. Hm they tried that i guess. Other than that the vi- oh why did the violin exit like that
The song is bouncing in my ears weird!! It’s giving me monster vibes atm. There’s a definite thread of messages goin thru this album & oof i love being sad,, the children come & go as you weep? Lol i love being sad. I am a waste?? My words are empty [as the bed we made]. Wilder mind is comin out on this, the album, huh!! The optimism on this album is-- I”LL MEET YOU OUT THE DELTAAA< WHERE THE RIVER”S RUINNING TO THE SEA,, GOD i love it. Ooh these drums, cool cool, it’s.. This is cool. Also sampling marcus’s children is sure way to eff everyone up, but that’s for another post,, ooooh i’m soft!! When it feels like nothing else matters :((((( lets go with this build!!! I wanna go for a run and have a cry.. Ooh man i took a moment there… this is so nice :( i’v missed them!!! Whats goin on with his vocals here,, the recording is like too close,, on purpose?? Hm. dust to dust!! I see you!! Marcus is truly giving his all here,, ugh I”m so proud of all of them, they put their LIVES on this, didn’t they!!! This song is such a feeling,, i can’t describe it i’m sad, but awwwW! I don’t kno wtf these kids are saying but wow that was cute as all heck!!! I”m so soft!! The album is over!! They did it!! Frick i don’t know how to feel!! Good really, but wow!!! Trying to not let my own sadness affect this review haha but !! what a nice body of work they produced!! In all the best ways, mostly!! I love them!!  I wanna have another listen!! Aw!!!! Frick guys. Frick. Can’t imagine anyone wants to slog thru this and have a read but,, anyway thanks if you did i guess, special thanks to Mumford & Sons for being my favorite band and always :( always being there when I need it. I needed this. wow. wow. Wowww!!!  Oof, haha i’m sad
Okay wait also he should’ve repeated the “I’ll meet you at the delta part” at least one more time but eff my criticism that song captures all stages of life and i truly wanna cry, so there’s that. Theses guys put it all out there & I really love them for that.

Sunday Spins #1
Welcome to Sunday Spins first post! Let me start by saying thank you for making your way here! This weekly blog will shine light on 3 new tunes that are currently on my radar, then rewind it back to 1 older song that I hold near and dear to my heart. Top 3 New Tunes of the Week #1. Give A Little - Maggie Rogers I've been listening to Maggie since her first EP, Now That The Light Is Fading (2017), which I ended up purchasing on a 10" vinyl because of how much I loved it. Give A Little comes from Roger's newest album that dropped on January 18th and it has been on repeat since. Although it was released in April of 2018, the day of the national school walkout in protest of gun control laws in the United States, it holds up as the perfect start to this album. With it's light-hearted, dreamy feel and bouncy beat, it keeps you bopping from start to finish. My favourite thing about this song in particular is layered vocals in the chorus that sings "give a little, get a little", it gives me major HAIM vibes, who I am also a big fan of, and I am here for it. #2. I Know - King Princess (Feat. Fiona Apple)
Though this isn't a "new song", this new recording and collaboration with King Princess brought attention back to the emotional track I Know originally performed by 90's queen Fiona Apple on her album When The Pawn... With some added electric guitar riffs and the rawness of King Princess's voice harmonized with Fiona Apple's, it adds another level of melancholy to the already emotionally charged lyrics. King Princess is quickly capturing the attention of the pop-music scene with her consistent releases starting with her debut EP Make My Bed released in June of 2018 followed by single Pussy is God (2018) and modern cover of the Velvet Underground & Nico's Femme Fatale (2018). I can't wait to see what this LGBTQ+ icon does next! #3. I Need Yoü - Ånanę This chill new track comes from local Toronto underground hip-hop artist Ånanę. Released just 2 weeks ago, I Need Yoü starts off 2019 with some simple blues guitar chord progression and relaxed beat along with Junior Anane's uniquely deep and smooth vocals. He sings "uninvited, uninspired, undesired" in such a way that portrays the exact emotion of feeling low in confidence and certainty; the feeling of when you just need to be held and felt understood by someone to get you through the storm of thoughts that crowd inside your mind. Ånanę is known for his emotional and honest lyrics about his personal struggles in life and his childhood. He has been releasing music since mid 2018 and you can find more of his tracks on both Apple Music and Soundcloud. Rewind << We're Going To Be Friends - The White Stripes (2001) This song comes from the iconic album White Blood Cells by The White Stripes. This is an adorable acoustic story of the simplicity and innocence of being a kid in grade school and making friends and it has come back into my life recently as I've made my own new friends. When I first started at Metalworks Institute for Music Business, my biggest fear was making friends. The first friend I made was Sebastian, who lived in Toronto and had just moved from south Africa only a couple days prior. I was also living in Toronto at the time and was lucky enough to own my own car, so I took the opportunity to offer him rides to school to save him the trouble of the terrible commute with the TTC and Go Transit systems. After a few weeks of early morning drives to class and sunset rides back to Toronto with a grand total 2 hours spent in the car daily, we had much to talk about and became good friends. We exchanged music that inspired us, discovered countless albums and artists and talked about the all things in life that we have yet to understand like politics, taxes and the education system; you know, fun stuff like that. During my first week of school, I also became friends with another group of pals who were already friends before coming to Metalworks. On the first day of school, I nervously gathered up the courage to talk to them. Mack, Moira and Pav all seemed to be interested in a lot of the same things as myself; indie bands, unhealthy amounts of coffee, patterned socks, memes, etc. it made sense. I kept hoping that I was cool enough to be hangout with them. One Friday afternoon, Mack invited me to join him and Moira for lunch since Pav had Music Theory class during our 2 hour break in-between classes. After a couple more breaks spent getting brunch together at the Crooked Cue and discussing what we had just learned, we became inseparable. Fast forward to now – 5 months later; we're living in a small house together in Hamilton and I’m cozied up in my twin-sized bed, just about to fall asleep until I hear the faint sound of acoustic guitars. It’s Mack and Sebastian strumming and singing away to We’re Going To Be Friends in our furniture-less living room. And I couldn’t be happier. I can tell that we’re going to be friends for a long time.

Francisco Martin Serves Long-Distance Drivers With A Lullaby Dubbed 'Passenger Princess' Francisco Martin is a rising star in the music industry, captivating audiences with his soulful voice and compelling lyrics. Born and raised in San Francisco, California, Martin's passion for music began at a young age. He started performing in front of his family and friends, and eventually expanded to local venues around the Bay Area. Martin's breakthrough moment came when he auditioned for American Idol in 2020, earning a spot on the show's 18th season. He quickly became a fan favourite with his performances of hits like "Alaska" by Maggie Rogers and "Falling" by Harry Styles. He ultimately finished in the top five of the competition, cementing his place as a rising talent in the industry. Since his time on American Idol, Martin has been hard at work creating new music and building his fanbase. His debut EP, "Beautiful Ramblings," showcases his powerful vocals and heartfelt songwriting. The lead single, "Wild Girl," is a standout track that showcases Martin's ability to seamlessly blend indie-pop and R&B influences. With his undeniable talent and charismatic personality, Francisco Martin is a force to be reckoned with in the music world. Fans eagerly await what he has in store next, as he continues to captivate audiences with his music and authentic artistry. This is Francisco Martin's first new release of the year 2023, and it's a doozy: the new track is called "Passenger Princess," and it's soulful, lively, and explosive. In this song, which obviously takes tribute to the popular meme circulating on the internet about females who don't drive but are driven spoilt, life is seen via a wide-angle lens, with cinematic panoramas of sunsets and the Pacific Coast Highway. "Passenger Princess" is a tapestry of TikTok that includes aesthetic hedonism and mesmerising melodies that make you want to go for a drive just because it makes you want to. Whereas Francisco's sophomore EP contains starkly unapologetic and unafraid chronicling, "Passenger Princess" is a stark contrast. The poem incorporates many entries from the Urban Dictionary, transforming a meme into a musical composition. [embed]https://open.spotify.com/track/1ggeREUEQo2Qt5prF16UsX[/embed]

INTERVIEW WITH KO NARTER
Tumblr media
I met Ko Narter during my NYU summer program (shocking, I know. I’m not sorry that I got to meet some of the coolest most artsy people over the summer, though.  Even better, I can show them to my readers, which is so dope.) I had just moved into my dorm and I was about to unpack when Ko and a few other girls knocked on my door and asked if I wanted to hang.  That was such a relief because I didn’t know what I was going to do until class the next day.  I was planning on sitting in my room?? Lol.  I thought that was really nice of her.  Anyways, I guess it was her cool Bay Area aura or the fact that she tried to break a world record for wearing Paul Frank shirts for 187 days in a row in the third grade, but Ko and I have very similar tastes in music, and our writing styles are very similar, so we connected pretty fast.  It wasn’t one of those famous jam seshes without her! When it came time for our student showcase at the end of the program, another girl in our group and I were paired up to harmonize with Ko for her song “Remnants,” which is actually on her brand new EP!  Unfortunately, I lost my voice and didn’t get to perform with her, but every time I listen to “Remnants” it reminds me of NYU.  Anyways, here is my interview with Ko!
Give us some basic facts about yourself !
Birthday: 1/24/2000 Zodiac Sign: Aquarius Favorite Food: Carne Asada Burrito from Cactus (sad because I am a recent vegetarian) Favorite Color: to wear - black, to look at - some sort of forest-y green Currently Based: Oakland, CA Nicknames: Ko is a nickname! My full name is Koyuki which means “little snow” in Japanese! Fun Fact: My high school has a bird calling contest, and I won 2nd place in both 2016 and 2017.
How and when did you start making music?
When I moved to California in 2006, a lot of the friends that I made were in choir, so I  decided to try it out. That’s really where my deep love for music began. I seriously started making my own music in middle school, when I joined a band called “the Bystanders” that some of my friends had started. Throughout middle school and into Freshman and Sophomore year, we transitioned from doing mostly covers, to writing our own music. Throughout the course of the band, I went from drummer, to lyricist/lead vocalist. I didn’t write my own completely original song until Freshman year, when I had just recently learned G Em C D on guitar, and ran with it. That first song I wrote is now “You’ve Already Won” off my EP.
Who are some of your musical influences?
A huge part of my creative drive is seeing artists around me create music. There are some other artists and bands at my high school, and though we have completely different styles, I love supporting them and seeing people my age trying to do what they love doing, just like I am. As for some bigger musicians, right now I’ve been listening to Maggie Rogers, Khalid, Gavin James, Daniel Caesar, Stephen Day, and SZA. Some long time faves are Sylvan Esso, Kodaline, and Childish Gambino, and Us the Duo. My music taste is pretty eclectic but I really value strong vocals and lyrics which seems to be a common thread among most of my favorite artists. My all time favorite band is Thirdstory.  If anyone reading this has never heard of them - you MUST check them out. I have cried listening to their music a couple of times because I am so blown away by the emotion and thoughtfulness that emanates from their music.
Tumblr media
You’re also in a band, Power Beez, how did you guys get together?
My bandmates, Maggie and Kay, were also in that band “The Bystanders” in middle school, so we’ve been friends since middle school, and have been making music together since middle school. We really became a trio when we all took Dance PE during our Junior year, and spent a lot of time together either choreographing or just hanging out. We are also all in the student run a cappella group in our town, the Troubadours,  so when someone asked for performers at a charity event at Dress Best For Less, we thought we’d take a crack at it. It all started with us covering “Who Says” by Selena Gomez, and “Fireflies” by Owl City, but as we arranged more music, we found that we had such a special sound, and because we had been making music together for so long, we knew what sounded good in each of our voices and how to divvy up parts. Our love of tacky 2000s Disney bops and passion for three part harmony really solidified us as a group.
What’s the story behind your band name?
Maggie, Kay, and I all took Dance PE, as mentioned in the previous question, and for our winter dance concert we were trying to think of a title for our dance. All the dances in the show seemed to be about power or puppets so we were toying with names with the word “power” in it. We were sitting in the theater when our dance teacher kind of blurted out “what about Power BEEEES” and said it in this very comical voice. Honestly our entire dance class career was a meme. Our first dance was called “Power Beez,” (“z” instead of “s” for comedic effect) our dance for our April dance concert was “Power Beez: the Squeakquel,” a la Alvin and the Chipmunks, and our final dance was called “Power Beez: Road Chip” (or maybe Chipwrecked - I can’t remember). When we started performing as a vocal trio, we were going to perform at our first official gig and when asked for a band name I guess “Power Beez” was the only thing that really made sense. What all started as a joke has now become our trio’s official name.
What was your inspiration for your new EP, KONA?
I don’t know if I should name drop in this because who knows who’s reading so -  this EP is almost entirely about one person, with a few lyrics being inspired by frustrations I was having in other relationships in my life. The easiest way to describe my relationship with this one person between Freshman through Junior year is “it’s complicated.” I mean we are still tight to this day but between being tight 4 years ago to today, our relationship has changed a lot, and you can hear the relationship shift on the EP. In chronological order, I wrote You’ve Already Won spring of Freshman year, and it’s about how I was foolish to think anything could last between the two of us. After our fleeting fling, we remained friends through my Sophomore year. In the summer between my Sophomore and Junior year (his summer before college) we worked at a summer camp together, and afterwards had another fling, but this fling was definitely much more emotionally involved and we were much closer. When he left for school, I had a lot of sadness and frustration, but we still talked even though we were no longer romantically involved. When I started seeing pictures of a girl on his Instagram, I wrote Her vs Me about how this girl was obviously more his type than I was. As I got deeper into Junior year, I wrote Remnants when people kept bringing him up, and all I was trying to do was forget him. I go to a small high school in a small town, so Continent of Conquests is about how he left me with nothing whereas he got to dive into a new city and new school and got to move on much faster than I did. Dead End was a bit of a backslide, when I realized I was always gonna hold a special place in my heart for him, and lastly Expiration Date tells the story of how I finally moved on, but also analyzing and criticizing his actions in our relationship. To get back to the question you actually asked, I don’t know if it’s fair to say he was the inspiration for the EP, but without him I wouldn’t have been able to write and create the way I did.
How long did it take you to write and produce KONA?
I wrote the music in a span of a few years, from Freshman to Junior year, arranged the music with Kay and Maggie (from Power Beez) in a few three hour rehearsals, and then recording took 15 hours and mixing probably took another 10 at least. My dear friends Kay, Maggie, and Emmett all volunteered their time, talent, and equipment to make this all possible.
What was the production experience like?
I learned so much through making this EP. There was always another bump in the road whether it was having to re-record a guitar part, or getting sick and not being able to record. Everyone I worked with is a teenager like myself, and we all still have so much to learn in the music making world. For example, Emmett had mixed all the music and I was reviewing it for upload, when I realized that all the songs had been mixed in stereo, and the harmonies were coming through different sides of my headphones. I’m glad Kay and I caught the mistake, because that is not the way I had intended on releasing my music, but it was an artistic choice that Emmett had chosen. Not that stereo is wrong in any sense, but it wasn’t what I was going for. Little miscommunications like that definitely made the process longer, but I have a much more solid grasp on what I want my sound to be, and I know how to direct people to help me get there.
What’s the story behind your cover art?
This one’s kind of funny. The guy that all the songs are about also did the cover art! I sent him a text that straight up said “would you be willing to do album art for an album about you?” and he was totally down. I love that we are still homies, and he was so chill about it.
What’s your favorite song off the EP?
That’s like making me choose a favorite child! I guess I will always have a special place in my heart for You’ve Already Won. It was definitely most fun to record. Kay, Maggie, and I recorded the three-part harmony bridge live, unlike most of the harmonies on the EP in which we recorded tracks one by one and layered them in production. There is nothing better than locking in on some SICK three part harmony, and getting to put that on the EP was super special. It’s definitely not the most complex song, but there’s something about those lyrics and harmonies that continue to resonate with me every time I listen to it or perform it.
Can we expect new music?
Yes! This EP is actually half of an album, “Kona,” that I wanted to release, but I decided to divide the album into two EPs: “Pt. 1: You,” and “Pt. 2: Me.” It made sense for me to divide it this way because “Pt. 1: You” is all about how this one person (and a few others) affected me, and really is more about them than it is about me. “Pt. 2: Me” however, is much more introspective, and though I reference other people in the songs, it is definitely centered around my internal monologue and my thoughts on friendship and leaving for school next year.
What’s your dream venue to perform at?
I would say the Fillmore in San Francisco, and then the Fox Theater in Oakland. I have seen shows at both of these venues, and the Fillmore is pretty spacious, but definitely super intimate. Anywhere in that room has a good view, and I feel as an audience member that it is so easy to connect to artists at the Fillmore. The Fox is a way bigger stage, and eventually I would love to be playing to as many people who will listen, but for now I’ll stick to a more intimate and dedicated audience.
What genre would you define your music as?
Uhhhhh maybe Alternative? Easy-Listening? Is that a genre? I feel like my music isn’t necessarily happy or sad, but it is good in any mood. It’s definitely not super hype as in there isn’t a pounding bass or an intense beat drop, but it’s very calm music with a bit of a sarcastic/sassy kick if you listen to the lyrics :). Good for studying, good for a good post-breakup cry, and good for a just chillin’!
Anything else you want to add!
I tell this to everyone I know that likes music, but making music is SO EASY and there is no risk at all! I’m not saying writing, arranging, recording, producing, and releasing music is easy, but who is stopping you from jamming out with your friends to some song that you all know the lyrics to? Who is stopping you from posting a Soundcloud cover of whatever artist you have been listening to recently? Who is stopping you from writing lyrics that you may not have a tune for until months later? I always encourage people to create and to collaborate because it has been so joyful and gratifying in my own life, and I wish for everyone to have such a great experience with music as I have.
You can listen to KONA on Spotify and Apple Music!
Rock On,
